A DAY IN THE CITY “7 Vignettes” (1986). These musical scenes from the city are excellent study and recital pieces. Each vignette depicts an experience the composer had one day during a visit to New York City. The movements are Another Sunrise, Off to a Busy Day, The Lost Key Episode, The Waitin' in Line Blues, Romantic Interlude, Sudden Storm and Out on the Town. "Tonal, charming and imaginative! CAMEL MUSIC for solo trombone. The trombone is treated as a sound synthesizer as the performer is asked to produce a wide variety of nontraditional timbres on the instrument (percussive and vocal sounds, multiphonics, etc.) The trombonist recites and narrates the text of an Aesop fable while at the same time accompanying himself/herself on the instrument. The words, which are often divided into single syllables, are frequently distorted when sung or spoken into the instrument. This adds to the richness of tone colors being produced during the performance. In addition, Camel Music combines musical performance with some theatrical behavior by the performer. The music and acting depend on one another to create a special kind of experience. This work has received hundreds of performances over the years and has proven to be a hit with all types of audiences, including those comprised of children. (5’) Grade VI.

EUPHONIC RHAPSODIES for solo euphonium is in 3 movements that showcase the capabilities of the instrument without using extended techniques or extreme range. It can be played on either a three or a four-valve euphonium. Although this composition is suitable for advanced high school and college-level players, professional performers will appreciate its incisiveness and musical sophistication. In the first and last movements references are made to the legendary performer and teacher, Leonard Falcone. In Homage to Leonard his name is expressed rhythmically in Morse code is employed in a lively, tuneful way. It is also used in the cadenza of the third movement, Go! The title of the beautiful second movement is Ballad.

ON THE STROKE OF MIDNIGHT for solo trombone (playable on bass trombone) traverses a wide variety of atmospheres, from ranging from gentle, mysterious passages, to intense and powerful exclamations. This work was written for trombonist, Dr. Brian Brink. Throughout there is a sense of mysticism, as if an incantation is taking place around the arrival of midnight. Various extended techniques enhance the traditional trombone sound, such as plunger effects, simultaneous singing and playing, flutter tonguing, growling, etc. The composition may be performed as a traditional concert piece or as a theatre piece.
